my story so far
I am an editor for the American University in Cairo Press (AUCP) in Cairo, Egypt. I have held this position for over seven years, during which I've edited scores of academic non-fiction, literary fiction, and non-fiction texts. Most AUCP publications are translated from the Arabic and are focused on Middle Eastern and North African themes. I have successfully collaborated with colleagues from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds to carry texts from the translation to design stage. During my time at AUCP, my area expertise and Arabic language skills have undergone substantial maturation.

I was recently invited to work as a facilitator for the Soliya Connect Program, which is based in New York, NY and Cairo, Egypt. I completed Soliya’s Advanced Intensive Facilitator Training in July and will begin co-facilitating live online college courses, comprising students from various countries, in Fall 2011. The Connect Program aims to provide a platform for live digital cross-cultural exchanges, wherein students from diverse backgrounds can discuss a variety of topics. I am thrilled to bring my years of experience in language and area studies, time spent living abroad (3 years in Cairo, Egypt; 4 years in Tokyo, Japan), and my work in conflict resolution to the Connect Program in order to help students acquire the tools needed for successful cross-cultural dialogue and understanding.

I graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 2003, where I took my BA in Middle East Studies. My coursework at Penn was focused on modern Middle East history and Arabic and Persian-Farsi language study. While at Penn, I worked at the Linguistic Data Consortium (LDC), where I participated in compu-linguistic research, research and analyses of Arab and Iranian media, and helped to build a database of Persian-Farsi lexicon to support an automated content extraction (ACE) program. My position at the LDC was focused on research but I also supervised a small team (5) of colleagues, who were all native Arabic speakers.

I recently graduated from Drexel University’s Global and International Education/Peace Education Master of Science program. For my master’s thesis I carried out an action research study of an informal education program called BookWorks. Specifically, I designed a mechanism for feedback and collaboration among tutors and students participating in the program. This instrument enables tutors to undertake reflective teaching practices and apply conflict analysis tools to become more cognizant of what best supports teaching and learning in this unique environment.

I am passionate about learning and communication, and love to be out of her element. I welcome the opportunity to work with individuals who are curious, spirited, and creative thinkers in order to carry ideas from conception to fruition. She’s a dreamer, a thinker, and a doer and I am dedicated to work that heals rather than work that steals.
ask me 'why global tolerance?' and I will answer
Our diversity enriches us, our conflicts afford us ongoing opportunities to grow, create, and evolve. Global tolerance enables us to expand our worldviews and our hearts. Why global tolerance? Why not.
the one thing I would change in the world is...
The excessive monetization of teaching and learning, which has created curricula less focused on developing holistic and humanitarian thinking and engagement.
I'm passionate about...
Communication, education, cross-cultural exchange, language study, conflict transformation, and continued growth through exploration.
connect with me to talk about...
digital cross-cultural and language exchanges, conflict transformation, mentoring, peace education and project-based learning curriculum development, the MENA region and Iran, distance education, open source learning.
