Pinch Me I Must Be Dreaming: Is This the Future of Philanthropy? | ....
Check out this article on an impending shift in the way that philanthropists provide funding.
This is a welcome if slow-to-take-shape change. Every day I hear from young activists around the world who are eager to connect and collaborate in order to effect real change in their local communities. The long history of failed "development" efforts, which have left far too much room for corruption and a lack of accountability, has left many folks--planners and searchers alike (to use Easterly's terms)--cold. Flexible funding for grassroots initiatives and an increased focus on networks that enable grassroots social entrepreneurs to communicate, collaborate, and share best practices will revolutionize "development" from a top-down industry with far too many over-paid bureaucrats into a buzzing web of authentic change-makers. Hurrah!
Greg, Rabab, and I will be discussing opportunities and obstacles in post-Mubarak Egypt at the Global Washington Annual Conference on October 31st.
